Eugen Doga has undergone a serious professional training in Chisinau Conservatory in a cello class and afterwards – in a class of theory and composition, and he graduated in 1965. His thesis was a symphonic poem "Mother" based on A.David printmaking, which he didn’t like as it was written under an intense guidance of his Professor S. Lobel.
He had a desire to compose music not according to the rules that he had been taught by excellent professors, but according to the intuition, which would carry the deep roots of recent and remote ancestors on the basis of the academic knowledge he received. This forced the young composer to abandon writing music for a good two years. He thought it would be forever. That period of "silence" gave him an opportunity to rethink his knowledge and arrive to his first composer attempts.
One time, during a class of Eugen Doga with his students where he was teaching music theory and composition, a person came from the studio "Moldova-Film" and offered to write music for a new movie. The composer reluctantly agreed and the work began. All of a sudden, all doubts about how and what to write, have gone away. He realized that a professional composer has to be able to write in any genre of musical art. He may choose something special to him, a favorite genre, but everything else he has "in his pocket".
For example, a serial composition technique, which Eugen Doga was fond of once, has helped him in composing the 6th scene of the ballet "Luchiaferul", in a scene with the Almighty. There, in the universe, there are no earthly notions and categories. There is even no place for a melody.
Yet the most important thing that the author is seeking here, on Earth, and what he follows is the melody. It has to be the foundation of music of various genres and the most modern composer technologies. This is evident in many of his works from simple songs that are sung to this day, to complex large-scale symphonic works: in the ballets “Luceafarul " (1983) and "Venancio" (1989 ) , his first symphony (1969), six string quartets ( suites ) written with a break of 10 years starting in 1963. He has composed 12 a-cappella choirs, and also several cantatas with soloists, a chorus and a symphonic orchestra, including a cantata for children's performance ("Liah – chiokyrliya”, “Bună dimineaţa"(Good morning), “Vine-vine primavera” (The spring is coming), "White rainbow”), Requiem for soloists, chorus and Symphony orchestra, more than 60 waltzes, as well as many pieces for violin, cello, flute, accordion, piano. Almost finished is the ballet "Queen Margot” and the opera "Dialogues of Love", the fragments from which have already been repeatedly performed in concerts. His numerous concert programs the composer mostly (about two thirds) compiles from the major works, overtures (he has written two), cantatas or arias from his new works. Thus, in the latest concerts of last season in Bucharest and in the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory the fragments from the ballet “Venancio " and the opera "Dialogues of Love” were first performed.
The serious issues the composer touched did not prevent him from working for children audience. Eugen Doga wrote a lot of songs and cantatas for children. That is: the "White Rainbow" cantata written on the poem by E. Loteanu (1984), "Hymn to the Sun" - the vocal and dance suite written on the poem by G. Vieru (1984), the "Let There Be Peace" cantata - on the poem by I. Podoleanu (1987), the songs "Rain" - on the poem by G. Vieru, and "Santa Claus" – on the poem by A. Păunescu (1993).
A distinctive feature of his symphonic music is bright and original orchestration, as well as abundance of background singing. His music has the ability to be painted in different national colors – from Moldovan, Russian and oriental to the variety of styles of Latin America. It has become possible due to the thorough studying of folklore of various nations. A composer in the making grew up and developed among the amazing Moldovan "lautaros" - folk musicians, and it deeply influenced all of his creative work, and also instilled in him an appreciation for creative art of different nations.
Academic music of Eugen Doga is founded on the classic examples of the expression of musical thought. Even his songs are colored in academicism, which gives them not only the quality of the composing, but also extends the "life of these very songs. Any profession, in any human activity, and especially music should be based on training – believes Eugen Doga.
